How To Fix Expandable Garden Hose

Pocket hose is also known as an expandable garden hose or flexible hose. You will be able to fix your hose if you follow the steps below. I have researched and listed the 2 most common problems regarding pocket hoses and how to fix them.

Problem 1: Leaks at the pocket hose end or valve end

How to repair pocket hose end / nozzle leaks?

If your hose is leaking at the end of the hose aka the joint where the fitting connects the nozzle or sprayer to your hose, the inner tube might have been dismantled or disconnected from the sprayer.

Leak at the hose end or valve end

1. Unscrew the plastic or brass fitting where it connects to the sprayer.
2. Pull off the outer hose covering and also the inner tube from the sprayer /nozzle.
3. Cut off 2 inches through both outer covering and inner tube, throw it away.
4. Pull the inner tube out of the covering & connect it back to the sprayer end properly.
5. Pull the outer covering over the tube connection and screw on everything back as before. (If there is a clip, make sure it connected properly to the notch)
6. Your hose is now good to go!

In case your fitting is broken or damaged you can get a repair kit to replace it. Check on Amazon  However, note that depending on which pocket hose you have you will need plastic, brass or aluminium fitting.

Problem 2: Hole in the Hose! Pocket hose is leaking from the middle

How to Fix Pocket hose leaks in the middle of the Expandable tube?

If your expandable / pocket hose is leaking in the middle it's likely the inner flexible tube has a hole in it. But unlike a regular rubber hose, pocket hose cannot be patched up with a waterproof tape. You will need to do a little bit to work to get it fixed.

Method 1: Using a Barbed Coupler

1. Identify the hole and cut the hose into 2 from that place.
2. Pull out the inner tube from the sleeves from both ends.
3. Find out which side has the hole and cut off the portion with the hole.
4. Take 2 screw clams and put them over the sleeves on both sides (do not screw yet).
5. Take a 1/2 inch barbed coupler, about 2.5″ long (Check on Amazon) and push both cut ends of the tube onto the 2 ends of the coupler
6. Slide the sleeve over the coupler as much as possible and tighten the clams on the coupler.
7. All done, your hose is now fixed and ready to use!

Wet both ends of the coupler before slipping the tube over, it makes it easier to put on.

Method 2: Using E6000 Glue, Self-Adhesive tape & some Fishing line for sewing!

Yeah, sounds a bit crazy, but this pocket hose mending method works.

1. For this repair you will need
   • E6000 Glue
   • Self-Adhesive tape
   • A razor blade (or thin paper cutter blade)
   • Some fishing line (braided is better) and a Needle
2. First, cut the outer covering of the hose carefully (do not cut the inner tube) near the place where your hose is leaking.
3. Pull the covering apart and locate the hole.
4. Use the E6000 glue to seal all around the area where the hole is. Smear it well and smoothen it out, leave it for 24hrs to dry.
5. Once dried, apply a second layer to E6000 glue just to be sure. Leave for another 24hrs.
6. Once dried, use the razor blade to slice out any uneven glue clumps. Be careful not to cut the tube.
7.  Take approximately 2 ft of Self-Adhesive tape and wrap it well around the glued area.
8.  Finally, pull the outer covering together closing the glued area and then sew it the needle & fishing line.
9. All done, your hose is good to go!
