Ok,

This is about equally basic a question as it can get.

I accept a 2005 Bayliner 195 Archetype. I take a 3.0L Mercruiser. I'd like to change the oil etc. While searching for the required supplies I found quicksilver filters at the local boat shop simply they were out of stock and wanted in excess of $x for one filter. That'south what I'd wait to pay for a top of the line mobil one at Autozone. I've been ownership some of the "Marine-Grade" crap for a while now, but I'm starting to call back that a car motor is a motorcar motor. Why 25W40 oil? This is a motorcar engine, just you can't find that combination at an auto parts store.

I digress. I'm searching for an auto shop alternative for the oil filter. I've read several oil filter threads and take a practiced feel for the different brands. I'm lacking the noesis of what fits this motor. How do I go to the store and selection the correct filter? Is this motor a Chevy? A GM? How do I know? How do I await up the filter at the parts store? All the books list filters by car make and model, not Chevy/GM pocket-size, medium, or large block.

Sorry to once again show my total newbie colors, but I'grand stuck.
Thanks
Jeff

Well, to make things harder for yous, that 3.0l GM was never used in a motorcar at all. It's strictly an Industrial/marine powerplant. Hither's a good link.
http://world wide web.gm.com/automotive/gmpowertrain/
Look nether the marine & industrial heading on the correct. But from the photograph, it looks similar a side mounted oil filter would be the same as a Chevy 5-viii, which is to say it'southward an AC Delco PF35 or PF25. But others on here volition know.
BTW, the reason for the "thick" oil is that boats tend to only operate in higher heat and definately heavy load situations. So where in my 3.4l V-half-dozen Impala it calls for 5w30, that same engine in a gunkhole might require HD30 or HD40. Expect at your possessor'southward manual for the engine, and see if there are other weights that are recommended, or "acceptible", that you can actually observe at the auto parts store or Wal-Mart.

If you accept a part number for your oil filter, you can get a Wix part number on thier site

http://wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp

Go to the second search option:
2. Competitor Interchange

and enter the part number y'all have

I did a 'google' search and it appears to be the same as the standard chevy V-8 oil filter (Wix 5061 tall, Wix 5069 short) merely check for yourself. Likewise many automobile parts stores have marine listings for your engine. (more than so with stores like NAPA than the discount chains like Autozone or Pep Boys)

This is one place where the marine part is not any dissimilar, just over priced. In the early 80s when I worked in a marina we sold genuine Volvo Penta parts - when our supply of filters came in they were AC filters - not repainted, non reboxed. These were ordered directly from VP and we paid the inflated VP price - and we got grief from the cutomers because they could buy the exact aforementioned part downward the road for much less.

Expert luck
Doug

F18, nope that three.0 is non the Atomic number 26 Duke (which incidently began information technology's life every bit a Pontiac engine in the 60s, I believe). That's what i used to remember, too, but they are non the same engine at all. The biggest deviation is that your 3.0 has intake and exhaust ports on the same side of the head. A ii.5l Iron Knuckles or later Tech four engine, does not. Jack is correct in the useage of the iii.0 in forklifts and such.
Sorry, I can't assistance y'all with Wix numbers, I merely know AC Delco numbers. And every bit Real McCoy found in his reasearch, he thinks information technology'due south a V-8 Chevy filter (as did I). Then if you can, wait up a 1997 - 2000 Chevy P/U w/a 5.vii Vortec V-eight and run across what they utilize?

I'm just happy to be here!
